Welcome

My name is Mike and I’m the author (blogger) for the Co-pilot Chronicles. I’m a United Methodist pastor and hope to use this forum to explore issues of faith and life.  (And maybe some things that just bug me.)

The title, “Co-pilot Chronicles” comes from two bumper stickers that I haven’t actually seen on any car for a long time. The first bumper sticker said, “God is My Co-Pilot.” The second bumper sticker was in response to the first bumper sticker and said “If God is Your Co-Pilot You’re in the Wrong Seat.”

As a former pilot, the image of pilot and co-pilot is an image of which I am very familiar. In the cockpit of an airplane the captain sits in the left hand seat and the co-pilot sits in the right hand seat.

As a Christian I hope I can always remember to be in the ‘right’ seat which means I’ve given charge of my life and my journey to my captain–Jesus. Though sometimes I forget who’s supposed to be in the captain’s chair and climb into for awhile which usually ends up as some type of mess in my life. Thankfully, Jesus, when I get out of the captain’s seat, is very good at straightening out the mess I’ve made—even allowing me to re-claim the ‘right’ seat and to continue the journey with him.

Being a co-pilot doesn’t mean you don’t get to fly the plane and have some fun doing the flying. Being co-pilot with Jesus in the captain’s chair means that we do some flying and go some places that I would never attempt on my own. And it means that I discover some blessings that I would have never discovered had I been the captain and stayed closely confined in my little corner of the sky.

Try it sometime with your life—give Jesus the captain’s chair and take the ‘right’ seat and see what fantastic flying Jesus can do with you onboard.
